As we wave 2021 goodbye, and enter the new year, it’s the perfect time to reassess your habits (both good and bad) and check in with your skincare routine to see if you’re on the right path to achieve your ‘dream’ skin by the time December 2022 comes. And, as quickly 2021 flew by, you can just tell that it’s going to be the same this year.
And, the best thing you can do this January is to begin snowballing all your good habits, and slowly removing your bad ones. It's your chance to make your "December 2022" self proud.
But, things will be different for you this year. Instead of setting yourself unrealistic goals, you can have the big goal in mind (healthy relationship, x amount achieved with your business, or consistency with gym) and break it down into daily habits that’ll make the end goal achievable.
Got it? It’s an approach that’s backed by science. A recent study from the Dominican University of California found that the goal shouldn’t be focused on, the actual strategies to achieve the goal should be prioritised.

Here are 5 resolutions (or small habits) you can begin implementing this year to make 2022 your best yet.
5 Resolutions To Make 2022 Your Best Year Yet:
1. Take More Walks In Nature
The sounds of trees hissing, the warm breeze soothing your skin, delicate leaves falling on your arms. It's all good for your mental.
Research has shown that time spent in nature reduced stress, anxiety and depression. This is because people who engage in nature walks have less activity in the prefrontal cortex (a brain region that is associated with rumination) - and excess rumination can lead to effects of depression and anxiety.
And, it doesn't have to be difficult. You can spend 15-20 minutes every day for a small walk in nature - bring some earphones if you want to indulge in your fave music, podcast or noises. But, I recommended letting the sounds of nature do the work. Believe me… they are therapeutic.
Remember. It takes an average of 21 days to develop a good habit, so you’ve got this!
2. Use Sunscreen In Your Skincare Routine
Ahhh, here it comes again… talking about the importance of sunscreen in your skincare routine. But, it’s still often neglected by many American adults. A recent study showed that almost half of adults (46%) never wear sunscreen.
A few reasons why you need to use sunscreen:
Can prevent the signs of aging (excessive skin exposure can cause damage to your skin cells)
Reduces your risk of sunburn
Can lower your risk of skin cancer
And, quite like the daily walks in nature, this doesn't take much willpower to complete. It’s advised by dermatologists to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you step out of your home - just after you've moisturized your skin.

3. Make Your Nighttime Routine More Special & Sleep Better
This is such an important one because it has a direct correlation with your energy levels, your mood and your skin. So, if you’re the one who’s chasing all the above (and more), think about developing a healthy nighttime routine and prioritising a good nights sleep. 8+ hours is advised by professionals.
Some good habits to add to your nighttime routine:
Avoid blue light 30-45 minutes before you hit the snooze button. Blue light from electronics has been linked to blurry vision, eye strain, dry eyes and more. If you enjoy working in the evening, I would recommend you invest in some Blue Light Glasses (these help a lot with blocking out the dangers of the light)

Indulge in your favourite book 30-45 minutes before you sleep. If you want that ‘dreamy’ 8 hours of sleep, substitute scrolling through social media with reading your favourite book. A tip for you… put the book on your pillowcase just before you sleep - you’ll be more inclined to pick it up and read through it.
Sip on a nighttime tea. Ok, here’s how you add even more ‘sweet dreams’ to the above. Whilst you’re reading a book, have a nighttime tea beside you. Teas with chamomile extracts work the best, as they’re known for their ‘mind-soothing’ benefits.
A healthy nighttime routine is important, as it prepares you for the best sleep possible. And, when you sleep well, it has a positive effect on your mood, productivity and skin.
In fact, according to Patricia Wexler, MD, a dermatologist based in New York, “skin makes new collagen when you sleep, which prevents sagging. And, collagen is a protein responsible for well-repaired, bright and youthful skin.
If you want to make this a resolution for this year, start small. Start with a few healthy habits (like the ones above) and see what works for you.
4. Plan 3-5 Priority Tasks For The Next Day
Disorganization, 8 pm 2 minutes away and you’ve noticed that your “priority” tasks still are not complete. Yep… we’ve all been there. But, if you feel the same, plan 3-5 priority tasks before you sleep and tackle the next day with more organization and willpower.
You can use:
A physical journal
An organization software like Notion
Or apps like OmniFocus, Microsoft To-Do & the Hit List on your smartphone.
By the way, the apps can be ideal, as they notify you when tasks are due, you can set up widgets on your home page etc. The more you’re exposed to your tasks, the more motivation you will have to complete them. Treat them like an accountability partner of some sort.
5. Embrace Consistency (in all areas of your life)
If there’s one word you embrace in your life this 2022, embrace consistency.
There’s a quote that I love by James Clear (the author of Atomic Habits):
“I accumulated small but consistent habits that ultimately led to results that were unimaginable when I started”
And, this can be the case for you this year.
Whatever you do this year (skincare, relationships, career, side hustles etc), do it with the word consistency in your mind. When you’re consistent, great things can happen. And, even if you don’t see insane traction in the first few weeks, keep going. Here's another quote for you, because why not...
“Rome wasn’t built in a day”
Yep… this one is quite a cliche, but it’s true. It’s the case when developing a new skincare routine, trying to keep up with a fitness regime, or even the small habits like those mentioned above. Start small and keep consistent. They’re the keys.
As we enter the new year, it's the perfect time to start developing good habits, and slowly removing the bad ones. But, it's important to think about the habits that'll bring out the best you (mentally, physically and spiritually).
